About Us:
IATSE Local 631 is based in Orlando, and services Workers that are engaged in the Crafts behind the scenes in live entertainment in Central Florida. This position is responsible for leading and executing external organizing opportunities and campaigns, with the purpose of helping unrepresented Workers find their voices and improving their workplace conditions, while always supporting the 4 pillars of the IATSE: Leadership Development, Craft Skills and Safety, Communications, Activism.

We seek Organizers to engage with workers and run impactful campaigns. As an IATSE Local 631 Organizer, you will be part of a team of staff and members who support workers in their fight to form a union in their workplace. Organizers report to the Business Representative, with a dotted line to the Office Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs and manage large organizing campaigns or multiple smaller campaigns including organizing comprehensive campaigns, strikes, and political action.
  • Conducts broad and intensive outreach to non-union workers.
  • Build one-on-one relationships with workers and establish trust.
  • Conducts worksites and home visits to workers.
  • Identifies and develops leaders to guide and lead their campaign.
  • Conducts individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action.
  • Works to involve community allies in organizing campaigns
  • Engages workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to beat on the industry.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will bring previous experience in labor union organizing. A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required. While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:

  • Three to five years of work in external labor union organizing.
  • Demonstrate experience in developing and leading organizing campaigns.
  • Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations preferred.
  • Capacity to work independently and with a team.
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
  • Effective and persuasive communications skills.
  • Basic writing and computer skills.
  • A valid driver’s license, working automobile, and auto insurance are required.
  • Flexibility to cooperate with other IATSE employees and other IATSE Locals.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary for gathering, analyzing, organizing information and evidence, as well as dealing with conflicting and changing priorities.
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think strategically, exercise a high level of judgment, and follow a strategic plan.
  • Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • This position is a full-time salaried position.
  • This position is largely computer/office based, with many in-person and Zoom meetings as well as events.
  • This position requires traveling to worksites/events and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.
  • This position may require hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must provide and maintain a cell phone with a data plan and internet access, and a home internet connection for work use.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This is an unrepresented full-time, salaried, at-will position. At-will employment in Florida means that the employer or the employee may terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any reason.
  • Compensation for this position is competitive and will be based on the experience and skills of the employee. Salary range is: $65,000 – $72,000.
  • Benefits include a milage reimbursement, health care, dental, prescription, vision, and retirement plans, and vacation/time off policy.
