Applications are being accepted for the position of Fire Inspector I (also referred to as Safety Inspector I)with the South San Francisco FireDepartment.

THE DEPARTMENT

The South San Francisco Fire Department provides residents, businesses and visitors with service in fire suppression; emergency medical and ambulance transport; hazardous materials response; urban search and rescue; marine rescue; fire prevention, investigation and public education.  The Department operates five (5) fire stations throughout the City, plus an Emergency Operations Center and Live-Fire Training Tower and is comprised of 92 dedicated staff members.

The South San Francisco Fire Department exists to protect the members of our residential and business communities, our neighbors and visitors, their property, and environment.  We will work to prevent injury and damage through education, fire prevention and to respond to the impact of fire, medical emergencies, natural and human-caused disasters, and release of hazardous materials. 

THE DIVISION

The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for life safety issues within the community. The division is involved with construction, occupancy inspections, public education and fire investigations. Fire inspections ensure that buildings and fire protection systems are built and maintained according to the applicable codes. The Fire Prevention Division performs fire plan checks and inspections for fire sprinklers, alarms and other systems. Fire construction permits are required to construct, alter, modify or repair a fire protection system.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, learns to and inspects and investigates for fire prevention-related activities; inspects fire protection systems, construction sites, structures, buildings, and occupancies to ensure an appropriate level of fire protection and compliance with applicable state and local ordinances, and with nationally recognized fire and building-related codes; conducts field inspections for compliance protection standards; investigates and reviews a variety of fire-related issues; enforces fire and life safety standards; investigates incidents for cause and origin; presents education to the public on fire prevention; and does related work as assigned.

This is a dual-role, safety class within the safety inspector series that specializes in fire prevention. It is distinguished from the higher classifications by the degree of independence and technical expertise the incumbent is expected to develop. Employees at this level receive frequent instruction and are expected to gain increased knowledge and expertise of the more complex fire prevention, inspection, and investigation practices and procedures.

Under general supervision, the Fire Inspector I works within a team environment to inspect and investigate for fire prevention-related activities; inspects fire protection systems, construction sites, structures, buildings, and occupancies to ensure an appropriate level of fire protection and compliance with applicable state and local ordinances, and with nationally recognized fire and building-related codes; investigates and reviews a variety of fire-related issues; enforces fire and life safety standards; presents education to the public on fire prevention; and does related work as assigned. The ideal Fire Inspector is service oriented, excellent communicator, friendly and professional.

Fire Inspector I essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, reach, crawl, climb, travel to different locations, and lift 50 pounds; exposure to noise, outdoors, confining workspaces, exposure to electrical, chemical, dust and other hazardous materials.

QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience:

  • Two years of progressively more responsible fire prevention or firefighting experience in a comparable department or state agency and experience working with the public in dealing with basic fire prevention standards, techniques, systems, and enforcement practices.

Training: 

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by courses in fire engineering, fire safety, or a closely related field. An associate’s degree from an accredited college in fire engineering, fire safety, fire science, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Certificate of completion of Fire Inspector 1A certified by the State of California Board of Fire Services.
  • State Fire Marshal Office certified Fire Inspector I, Fire Investigator or International Code Council Fire Inspector I certifications are highly desirable.

Licenses/Certificates:

The following licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

  • Possession of an appropriate valid California driver’s license.
  • Possession of Section 832 Penal Code, State of California – non-firearm Certification.

Benefits

Retirement:Membership in Public Employees’ Retirement System with survivor benefits. In compliance to AB 340, CalPERS retirement formula is either 3% @ 55; employee pays approximately 10% of pay (8% for miscellaneous members), OR 2.7% at age 57, employee pays approximately 12% of pay, depending on the individual's eligibility. Medicare participation and option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after retirement account.

Health Insurance: City offers a choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family).  For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Vacation:120 hours up to 240 hours annual vacation, based on the length of service.

Holidays:Thirteen total paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.

Programs:457 Deferred Compensation, Paid Parental Leave, Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Enhanced Employee Assistance Program, Peer Support, Long-Term Care, Disability and Life Insurance Programs, City Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Childcare Programs and Commuter Benefit Programs are available. 

Education Incentive Pay: Up to 7.5% depending on education level

Education Reimbursement Program: 50% of tuition costs, up to $2,000/fiscal year

Uniform Allowance:$1,000/fiscal year

Bilingual Pay:Premium pay of 2.5% for employees who speak designated languages of Spanish, Tagalog, or American Sign Language. (Qualifications determined through testing procedures).

Flexible Schedule: The fire prevention division supports a flexible work schedule.

This classification is in an employee bargaining unit.
