Job Summary:

The Office of Strategic Communication, UW-Madison's hub for storytelling, brand identity and support for key institutional initiatives, is looking for an experienced and talented writer to contribute across an array of short- and long-term projects.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience, sharp prose and an independent mindset to their work and is comfortable juggling multiple types of assignments.

The work will include researching and writing speeches and talking points, distilling campus reports for internal and external communication, writing news stories, creating branded emails and formal correspondence from campus leaders, and overseeing other complex communications tasks as needed above the skill and sophistication of an entry-level hire.

The successful candidate will play an important role in identifying themes and advancing the story and reputation of the university. They must also be attentive to detail, efficient, and able to collaborate easily with a wide range of people, from senior leaders to students. This role reports to the Director of Executive Communications.

Responsibilities:

Develops and supervises the execution of communication programs and may supervise personnel and/or other resources in support of institutional or unit communication goals.
  • 10% Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives
  • 40% Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders
  • 5% Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets
  • 5% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • 20% Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences
  • 20% Interviews and gathers information from subject matter experts and archival sources to produce high-quality written materials for internal and external audiences

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree in journalism, strategic communications, marketing, English, or a related field.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
- 7+ years of experience specializing in executive communication or other written communication and/or marketing.
- Demonstrated ability to produce clear, well-written and accurate materials across a variety of channels

PREFERRED:
- Understand how to find, research and tell stories.
- Possess strong time-management and organizational skills, as well as the ability to handle multiple projects in a deadline-driven, highly detail-oriented environment.
- Embrace teamwork and possess the ability to work collaboratively to plan and execute projects.
- Demonstrate the ability to produce accurate, attention-grabbing content for an individual or brand. Experience writing first-person point-of-view materials for leadership. Must be comfortable with significant editing/rewriting of content that is produced.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently on complex projects and manage shifting priorities.
