Position Summary:
Develop your communication skills with this fun summer opportunity at a National Park Service site!
The purpose of Monocacy National Battlefield is to commemorate the Battle of Monocacy; to preserve the breastworks, earthworks, walls, and other defenses and shelters used by the Confederate and Union armies on July 9, 1864, as well as the buildings, roads, and outlines of the battlefield; and to provide opportunities for visitors to understand and appreciate the significance of the battle within the full context of the Civil War and US History.
We are seeking two Resource Education and Visitor Services Individual Placements to serve this summer at Monocacy National Battlefield. These interns will serve mainly with Resource Education Visitor Services division under the supervision of National Park Service staff. The purpose of this division is to create opportunities for visitors to experience both tangible and intangible connections to the park and understand it's significance and the need to preserve and protect it for future generations.
Interns this summer will have the opportunity to be a part of the 160 th commemoration of the Battle of Monocacy. They will assist in the preparation and programming. This will be a unique opportunity to be a part of a large-scale special event, working one on one with the public and entire staff at the battlefield. Interns may also development educational materials that are presented to the public in person and through digital media. The interns will work with rangers to provide more robust information of the trail systems on the park website, by doing research, writing, and potentially web-design. What they produce will improve writing skills and provide the intern with the understanding of how to write for a public audience. The intern will gain confidence in public speaking and working with the public through working at the visitor service desk, providing orientations, and assisting with special events. All these opportunities have on-line training that will provide the necessary support as well as that of the supervisor and fellow rangers.
The intern is expected to be on time, dressed neatly, and considerate of the supervisor and fellow co-workers.
